Haiku is an internationally-popular form of Japanese poetry which (traditionally) has three lines containing seventeen syllables and encapsulates a perceived moment of nature/awareness. There's a lot more to it than that, though, so if you want to know more, visit the Shiki Internet Salon - it's a great starting place and has a big lists of links to other haiku sites.
I discovered haiku when I was doing an MA in Writing (part-time 1993-96). I found the internet helped hugely in increasing my knowledge and experience of the form, especially the Shiki mailing list. Have a look at Some thoughts on the haiku process. Or not.
